Voice of Lines
The oldest Japanese anthology “ Manyoshu ” was recorded by Chinese characters, Kanji, in the late 8th century. About 100 years after that, the first anthology of Japanese poetry, “Kokin Wakashu” compiled by Imperial command, was edited in the Japanese original characters, “ Kana”.
Then Japanese culture had a big change from Chinese style to Japanese style.
The beauty of Kana, which is elegant and keeps its strength hidden inside it, became the origin of the Japanese beauty.
Kana, which were simplified from Kanji to the utmost limit, were born and grown up together with Waka ( Japanese traditional short poems ) about 1,000 years ago.
Kana are the emotional characters fitted to the feelings for lovers and the turn of the season.
Their flowing and curved lines also express the voices of Waka composers and they are Waka themselves.
I chose Waka which express the joy to the people and the nature from “ Kokin Wakashu ” and drew them on a sheet of paper.
And then by layering a lot of sheets of paper, I kept the emotions of the ancient composers and the periods on the paper.
The hearts and the voices of the ancient composers exceed in the meanings of the words will well up layering.
We could hear the voices of the millennial old days from the back of the lines of Kana.
